Short answer: mushroom chocolate is chocolate with a measured mushroom blend worked into it before moulding, sold either as scored bars or as individually moulded pieces. Bars cost less per gram; moulded pieces are easier to portion and share.
What mushroom chocolate actually is
The blend is folded into tempered couverture and moulded. The chocolate does two useful jobs: it masks an earthy flavour most people do not enjoy, and it carries the blend evenly so a batch can be divided into consistent portions.
Bars versus chocolate mushrooms
A bar is scored into squares, usually fifteen or twenty, and you break off what you want. Chocolate mushrooms are moulded one at a time, so a piece is already a fixed portion. Bars win on price per gram and on flavour variety; moulded pieces win on convenience.
How portioning works
Divide the stated total by the square count. A 3g bar scored into fifteen squares gives 0.2g per square. A 3.5g bar scored into twenty gives 0.175g. This only holds if the blend was distributed evenly during moulding, which is why batch consistency matters more than the number on the front of the wrapper.
Reading a product page properly
Look for four things: the total amount, the number of portions, the full ingredient list with allergens, and the packaging type. A listing missing any of those is asking you to guess.
Storage
Sealed, cool, dry, dark. Heat causes bloom, that pale streaking on the surface — cosmetic, but a sign the bar got warm. Skip the fridge: condensation ruins the snap and dulls the finish.
